NEW ORLEANS — A distraught mail handler shot three co-workers in the main New Orleans post office, then holed up in the building for 13 hours with a hostage, firing birdshot at random from under a door today, authorities said.
Warren Murphy surrendered this morning after all-night telephone negotiations with FBI and police, including a cousin who is a police officer. Murphy acted out of concern for the welfare of his two children, in his wife’s custody in Washington, police said. None of those hit by birdshot suffered life-threatening wounds, hospital officials said. One person was shot in the eye.
