HEALTH : Panel Backs Use of Fetal Tissue

WASHINGTON — A government advisory committee has unanimously endorsed a recommendation calling for an end to the federal ban on the use of human fetal tissue in scientific research, officials said today.
A committee that advises Dr. James Wyngaarden, director of the National Institutes of Health, voted to accept a report from a panel of scientific and ethical experts who concluded that using tissue from aborted fetuses for research is “acceptable public policy.” Although some of the committee’s 26 members made it clear that they think abortion is immoral, the group made no major changes in the research panel’s 63-page report.
