Steinberg Won’t Plead Insanity

NEW YORK — Lawyers for accused child killer Joel Steinberg dropped plans today to use an insanity defense that would require him to be examined by a prosecution psychiatrist.
Steinberg’s attorneys told acting state Supreme Court Justice Harold Rothwax that they would not move forward with that formal defense. “It would poison the jury’s mind as to Joel,” Steinberg attorney Ira London told reporters outside the courtroom. Steinberg, 47, a disbarred lawyer, is accused of beating to death 6-year-old Lisa Steinberg, whom he raised with his common-law wife, Hedda Nussbaum, 46, in Greenwich Village.
