Steve Ortmayer, the San Diego Chargers’ director of football operations, refused to deny a published report that the team (5-10) had decided to fire Coach Al Saunders as early as next week.

“The only thing that is on my mind and, I would assume, on Al’s mind right now is our game against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday,” Ortmayer said. “We really want to win the last 2. We really want to win 4 of the last 6.”
