Graduating high school seniors in the Garden Grove Unified School District may compete for scholarships with a total value of $8,000 that will be awarded to three girls and three boys by Garden Grove Elks Lodge No. 1952.
Judging of the scholarship applications will be based on financial need, scholastic achievement, leadership and participation in both scholastic and community services, said Craig Natland, scholarship chairman.
The boy and girl winning first place will receive $2,000 each; second place, $1,500 each, and third place, $500 each.
Applications are available from high school counselors or at the lodge, 11551 Trask Ave. Completed applications must be returned to the lodge by Jan. 20.
Local winners will be eligible for additional scholarships from the California-Hawaii Elks Assn. at the district and state levels. Top entries will be submitted to the Elks National Foundation’s 1989 “Most Valuable Student” contest, in which 1,798 scholarships totaling more than $3 million will be awarded. The top boy and girl will each receive 4-year scholarships of $5,000 a year.
