SDSU Won’t Offer Jones a Football Scholarship

Al Luginbill, San Diego State football coach, said Thursday in a statement that the university would not offer former Vista High School running back Marc Jones a scholarship to attend SDSU.
Jones currently is serving a year sentence at Camp Morena in Campo after pleading guilty in August to mayhem in connection with the beating and partial blinding of a Fallbrook teen-ager.
“I have had in-depth discussions with Marc, his parents and individuals within the Vista community that are familiar with Marc,” Luginbill said. “We will not offer Marc Jones a scholarship.”
Jones recently was denied admission into a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department furlough program that would have allowed him to attend SDSU.
“He has been admitted to the university and if he is cleared, through legal proceedings, to attend classes here, he will be given an opportunity to walk on in either the spring or the fall of 1989,” Luginbill said.
