WORLD : U.S. to Move Korean Military Bases

SEOUL — The United States and South Korea have agreed to relocate U.S. military bases from central Seoul to rural areas, the Defense Ministry announced today.
They will be moved by the mid-1990s, it said.
U.S. barracks in Seoul have been headquarters of the 8th U.S. Army and other American forces since the United States helped South Korea end the 1950-53 Korean War. South Korea wants to relocate the barracks to help meet growing demands for new offices and homes in the crowded capital. The announcement said a U.S. golf course in the bases will be returned to South Korea next year.
