LOCAL : Suspect Charged in O.C. Shoot-Out

From Times staff and wire service reports

Matthew G. Kaufman, 25, who was wounded in a shoot-out with Orange County sheriff’s deputies this week, was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm, auto theft, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest, authorities said today.

The Orange County district attorney’s office filed the charges Thursday against Kaufman for the attempted murder of Orange County Sheriff’s deputies Steve Ripple, Wayne Peters and John Heppert Jr. Ripple received a minor head injury during the shoot-out when he was grazed in the forehead. The other officers were not injured.

Kaufman, whose last known address was in Portland, Ore., led officers on a five-mile chase through Mission Viejo early Monday that ended in the gun battle at a cul-de-sac in Aliso Viejo. He originally was approached by a deputy in Mission Viejo for driving a car reported stolen in San Francisco.
