Priorities Established for Block Grant Funds

Federal funds earmarked to help the city’s poor this year will finance an $800,000 face-lift of south Glendale’s least affluent neighborhoods, improvements to two Christian community centers and the city’s housing rehabilitation program.
The Glendale City Council approved a plan Tuesday to distribute $1.8 million that the city received in Community Development Block Grant funds for 1989 among these projects.
Plans call for spending $808,810 in south Glendale on street-light installation, street beautification projects, anti-graffiti and youth recreation programs, and a mini-park at Cerritos School.
The Catholic Youth Organization will receive $100,000 to complete construction of a multipurpose community center on San Fernando Road.
The YMCA will receive $90,000 to install a fire sprinkler system for the rooms that it provides as temporary low-income housing.
Another $300,000 will be spent on city housing rehabilitation loan and grant programs, and $90,000 will go to building code enforcement.
Six community organizations will receive grants of less than $25,000, and the city will use the remaining $335,000 for administrative costs.
