Cooper Cos.: The diversified medical products company reported a second-quarter loss of $33.9 million, including an extraordinary loss of $2.7 million. In the year-ago quarter, an extraordinary gain of $1.4 million made the final loss $9.2 million. Sales for the quarter ended April 30 were $115.2 million, compared to $153.3 million a year ago. The Palo Alto firm said results for the period were not directly comparable primarily due to the dispositions of the company’s solutions and optical retail businesses in fiscal 1988 and its soft contact lens business in the United States and Japan in early fiscal 1989.
