Season’s First Tropical Depression Dissipates

MIAMI — The first tropical depression of the hurricane season dissipated Saturday off the coast of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.
The depression formed off the Mexican coast Thursday with top sustained winds of 35 m.p.h. and retained that wind speed until Friday night. If it had developed winds of 39 m.p.h., it would have become the season’s first tropical storm and been named Allison. Tropical storms become hurricanes when their top sustained winds reach speeds of 74 m.p.h.
The hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
