P.M. BRIEFING : Avon Won’t Call Again on Animals for Testing Its Cosmetics Products

NEW YORK — Avon Products Inc. today announced a permanent end to using animals in its product safety tests.
The cosmetics maker instead will rely on alternative non-animal methods, tests on people and a comprehensive computerized data base containing information on the safety of ingredients that have previously been examined.
James E. Preston, Avon’s chairman and chief executive officer, said the company has been working since the early 1980s to reduce the number of animals used in evaluating its beauty products and to find other means.
“This marks the successful conclusion of that program,” Preston said.
Avon had temporarily discontinued animal testing earlier this year.
Other beauty products companies also have announced temporary suspensions or reductions in the use of animal tests.
Noxell Corp., maker of Noxzema skin creams and Cover Girl cosmetics, said in January that it was screening many of its cosmetics by applying them to tissue cultures in laboratory dishes instead of injecting them into the eyes of rabbits.
Mary Kay Cosmetics, a door-to-door seller, said in May that it was imposing a moratorium on animal tests.
