Two-time U.S. Open singles champion Tracy Austin, who plays for the New Jersey Stars of TeamTennis, suffered minor injuries Thursday morning when her car was struck by another car at an intersection in Short Hills, N.J.
According to Jeff Austin, her brother, the accident occurred when she was attempting to make a left turn on a green light and was struck by the other car. She was the only person in her car and had her seat belt fastened, he said. The accident took place close to the hotel where the Stars were staying.
Austin, 26, was brought to the emergency room of Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J., at 11 a.m., EDT, hospital President Michael Sniffen said.
Jeff Austin, who also is her agent, said that several stitches were needed to close cuts on his sister’s arms and legs but that she suffered no broken bones.
Dr. David Schreck said that she would remain hospitalized overnight for observation.
In 1979, at 16, Austin became the youngest player ever to win the U.S. Open. She has limited herself to doubles play in recent months because of a foot injury suffered last April.
