P.M. BRIEFING : Californian Gets Agriculture Post

WASHINGTON — Agriculture Secretary Clayton K. Yeutter today named Daniel Haley, the No. 2 state agriculture official in California, as head of the Agricultural Marketing Service.
Haley is the second Californian to be chosen for high-level post in the Agriculture Department this year. Deputy Secretary Jack Parnell was the state’s agriculture director for two years before moving to Washington this spring.
The Agricultural Marketing Service has 6,500 employees who carry out duties that include setting commodity standards and grading farm products, buying food for federal feeding programs and monitoring producer-financed research and promotion program for a number of commodities, including beef, cotton, eggs and dairy products.
