An autopsy showed Sacramento Kings forward Ricky Berry held a semiautomatic pistol to his head and pulled the trigger within an hour of an argument with his wife, coroner’s officials said.
The autopsy revealed no diseases that would have contributed to a suicidal state of mind, officials said. Results of toxicology tests, routinely performed as part of an autopsy to determine the presence of drugs or alcohol, will not be available before next week.
Sacramento County Coroner’s Office spokesman Richard Miles said Berry and his wife, Valerie, argued in their suburban house at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday and that she left about midnight to spend the night elsewhere.
Ricky Berry killed himself “within the first hour after midnight,” Miles said. “We’re placing it (the time of death), at shortly after midnight . . . Midnight to 1 a.m.”
