NCAA Notifies Clemson of Investigation

After a week of rumors, Clemson learned officially Wednesday that its football program is being investigated by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Athletic Director Bobby Robinson released a letter dated Tuesday from the NCAA informing university President Max Lennon it had begun a “preliminary inquiry” into possible NCAA rule violations. The letter from David Berst, assistant executive director for enforcement for the NCAA, does not mention any specific sport or type of violation that may be of concern.

A week ago, the Atlanta Constitution reported that the NCAA was investigating football recruiting practices at Clemson, which was placed on two years’ probation in 1982.

The Tigers are not in danger of the “death penalty.” But, under NCAA regulations, the football program could still be suspended for a year if major rule violations are uncovered by investigators.
