Australia’s airlines, their domestic services grounded by a two-week-old labor dispute, began searching for replacement pilots as both sides in the bitter wage dispute spent the weekend planning their next moves. All 1,600 pilots resigned en masse Thursday to avoid being picked off one by one with legal action and dismissal over their 30% pay hike demand. The airlines responded by advertising for new pilots in major Australian newspapers. The same ads were to appear in newspapers in New Zealand, the United States, Britain and the Far East.
