P.M. BRIEFING : Japan Joblessness Still at Low 2.2%

TOKYO — Reflecting robust economic expansion, Japan’s unemployment rate for July was 2.2%, unchanged from June and again the lowest in more than seven years, the government reported today.
The government’s Management and Coordination Agency said the number of unemployed totaled 1.32 million, down 10.8% from a year ago. They included 790,000 men and 530,000 women.
The agency said the nation’s work force increased 2.2% to 62.4 million, the largest gain since December, 1973.
The ministry said the agriculture-forestry sector accounted for 4.83 million, up 0.2% over a year ago, and manufacturing 15.01 million, up 4.2%.
The Labor Ministry said there were 135 job openings for every 100 job-seekers.
