THE SIDELINES : Japanese Wins Summer Ski Jump

TOKYO — Shinichi Tanaka, a Japanese jumper at the 1988 Winter Olympics, made today’s longest leap of 90.3 meters and won the 70-meter Minakamionsen summer ski jump championship.
Competing on a plastic surface instead of snow, Tanaka was awarded 225.4 points for his two jumps, which also included an 89.9-meter leap on his first run. Tanaka also won the first Minakamionsen championship three years ago.
Paimo Ylipulli of Finland was second with leaps of 89.6 and 90.0 meters for 208.7 points.
