SACRAMENTO — A special election to fill the state Senate post recently vacated by Larry Stirling will be held Dec. 5, Gov. George Deukmejian announced Wednesday.
A special general election scheduled for Jan. 30 will be canceled, however, if any candidate for the 39th Senate District spot earns more than 50% of the vote in the December primary.
Stirling resigned his Senate post Friday after Deukmejian appointed him a San Diego municipal judge.
Assemblywoman Carol Bentley (R-El Cajon) said she is interested in running to replace Stirling, and Assemblywoman Lucy Killea (D-San Diego) is considering a campaign but has not made a final decision.
