South Roundup : Clemson Runs Record to 29-0 Against Virginia

Chris Morocco threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as 15th-ranked Clemson beat Virginia, 34-20, Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C., to extend the longest active winning streak by one I-A team over another.

Clemson, 5-1 overall this season and 2-1 in the ACC, is 29-0 against the Cavaliers and 5-1 overall for the year.

Virginia, playing without its starting quarterback Shawn Moore, dropped to 4-2 and 2-1. Moore is out with an injured shoulder.

Clemson led, 17-10, at halftime, but Virginia tied the score on its first play of the third quarter. Quarterback Matt Blundin, who was making his first start, faked a reverse and then passed to Herman Moore, 20 yards behind the closest defender, for a 75-yard touchdown pass play with 12:50 left.

But the Tigers answered with an 18-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a nine-yard run by Morocco. Morocco sealed the victory with 9:25 left when he hit Gary Cooper with a 43-yard touchdown pass at the goal line.

Miami (Fla.) 56, Cincinnati 0--First-time starter Gino Torretta passed for 239 yards and three touchdowns, one on an 88-yard pass play to Wesley Carroll, as the second-ranked Hurricanes blew out the Bearcats at Miami.

The victory was Miami’s most lopsided since shutting out Pittsburgh, 58-0, in 1967.

The Hurricanes, who beat Cincinnati, 57-3, last year, improved to 5-0. The Bearcats, who committed six turnovers and never reached Miami’s 40-yard line, fell to 1-3-1.

Torretta completed 13 of 16 passes as he directed Miami to a 42-0 halftime lead, then sat out the second half. The freshman was subbing for junior Craig Erickson, who broke a finger on his passing hand last week against Michigan State.

North Carolina St. 35, Middle Tennessee St. 14--The No. 14 Wolfpack led only 7-0 against the Division I-AA Blue Raiders before pulling away in the second half at Raleigh, N.C.

Shane Montgomery, who threw two interceptions in the first half, finished with 16 completions in 30 attempts for 177 yards and a touchdown to lead North Carolina State, off to its first 6-0 start since 1974.

Middle Tennessee (3-3) was facing a ranked Division I-A team for the first time.

South Carolina 47, East Carolina 14--Todd Ellis completed 17 of 32 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns, two to flanker Carl Platt, as the Gamecocks (4-1-1) overcame a sluggish first quarter to win easily at Columbia, S.C. East Carolina is 3-1-1.

Duke 35, Army 29--Clarkston Hines caught three touchdown passes and Randy Cuthbert ran for 147 yards in 19 carries and scored twice as the Blue Devils (3-3) beat the Cadets (2-2) at Durham, N.C.

Hines, the ACC’s leading receiver, had eight receptions for 150 yards. He teamed with quarterback Billy Ray on touchdown plays of 29, 22 and 19 yards.

Georgia Tech 28, Maryland 24--Shawn Jones threw four touchdown passes, including three in the third quarter, as the Yellow Jackets rallied to win at Atlanta and end a 16-game ACC winless streak. Tech’s last conference victory came on Nov. 1, 1986, a 34-6 win over Duke.

Tech (1-3 and 1-2) fell behind, 21-7, early in the third quarter after a five-yard touchdown pass from Neil O’Donnell to Ricky Johnson. Jones, a redshirt freshman, then went to work as Maryland fell to 1-5 and 0-3.

Wake Forest 17, North Carolina 16--Philip Barnhill threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Proehl with 2:37 left to help the Demon Deacons (1-3-1) hold off the Tar Heels (1-4 and 0-2) in an ACC game at Chapel Hills, N.C.

SW Louisiana 21, Tulsa 13--Brian Mitchell became the first major college quarterback to rush for 2,500 yards and pass for 4,000 in leading Southwestern Louisiana to a homecoming victory at Lafayette, La. Mitchell gained 103 yards in 24 carries and passed for 164 yards against Tulsa (3-3). The Ragin’ Cajuns are 4-2.

S. Mississippi 30, Tulane 21--Bret Favre passed for two touchdowns and Tony Smith returned a kickoff 80 yards for another as the Golden Eagles (2-4) beat the Green Wave (2-4) at Hattiesburg, Miss.
