NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Police Recall Scene on Evening of Rape
- Share via
Several New York City police officers testified in state court at a pre-trial hearing in the rape and attempted murder case against six Harlem teen-agers accused of the gang rape of a 28-year-old woman jogger in Central Park last April 19. The officers testified of their concerns over mounting attacks by a pack of teen-age boys in the park. Officer Mark Carlson recalled hearing reports of “screams” that evening, and said he saw a beaten male jogger who “looked like he was dunked in a bucket of blood.” That man was the last victim attacked before the crime spree culminated with the gang rape of the woman, authorities charge. Prosecutors are trying to show why police questioned the six youths, who gave damaging confessions that their lawyers are now trying to have thrown out of court.
