Kevin Mitchell, who led the major leagues with 47 home runs, was selected by Associated Press as major league player of the year. The Giants’ left fielder hit .291 with 100 runs scored, 34 doubles and 125 runs batted in.
Mitchell received 114 points in voting by writers and broadcasters to far outdistance teammate Will Clark, who had 20.
“It’s nice to be recognized, but it really has been a total team effort,” Mitchell said. “We had lots of injuries to the pitching staff, and (Manager) Roger (Craig) kept it all together.”
