NEW YORK — The world’s two largest computer companies have become voting members of a standards-setting organization for telecommunications networks, it was announced today.
The voting membership of International Business Machines Corp. and Digital Equipment Corp. should help the group settle on standards to reassure customers that the devices they use to run their phone and computer networks work together smoothly.
The group, the OSI Network Management Forum, was founded last year by several leading companies including American Telephone & Telegraph Co., British Telecom PLC, Northern Telecom Ltd., Unisys Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.
