NATION IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Robbery Leads Rise in Violent Crimes

Incidents of violent crime and personal theft jumped 3.1% last year, and blacks, Latinos and poor people suffered most often from serious crime. The Justice Department said that its National Crime Survey, which uses personal interviews as well as police statistics, found such crimes to be on the rise for the second straight year. Overall, violent crime fell 1.8% in 1988--rape dropped 23.9% and assault fell 3%--but robbery rose 6.5%.
