World IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Emigration Sought for Ethiopian Jews

Foreign Minister Moshe Arens said Israel will use its renewed diplomatic relations with Ethiopia to secure emigration rights for up to 20,000 black Jews living in that nation. Marxist Ethiopia, facing a mounting insurgency and badly in need of military aid, on Friday resumed diplomatic ties with Israel after 16 years. In 1985, Israel secretly airlifted about 12,000 Ethiopian Jews from Sudan to Israel in a move dubbed Operation Moses. But thousands had to be left behind, and it is believed that most of these would leave if they had the opportunity.
