Cypress Overcomes Katella, 21-20

ANAHEIM — Sean Gibson’s 18-yard touchdown reception and interception helped Cypress High School to a 21-20 victory over Katella Thursday in front of about 300 at Glover Stadium.
Gibson scored the winning touchdown on the 18-yard pass from quarterback Bobby Hubbard with 2:49 left. The play capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive. Cypress’ extra-point try was blocked, but the Centurions still led, 21-20.
Katella started its final drive on its own 30, but two plays later, Gibson intercepted a pass by Chris Reed with 1:53 left. Cypress (5-5, 2-3) then ran out clock.
Cypress took a 15-14 lead on a three-yard run by Brian Dawson and a two-point conversion with 11:19 left. Hubbard passed to Gibson for the two-point conversion.
Katella to a 20-15 lead on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Chris Reed to Pat Carter along the sideline. Katella (3-6-1, 1-4) then went for two points, but Reed’s pass fell incomplete with four minutes left.
