Survive Scores Upset in Hollywood Feature

Survive came from last to win Wednesday’s $40,000 six-furlong allowance feature on the turf at Hollywood Park by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:08 1/5.
It was the seventh win in 27 starts for the 5-year-old mare by Pass the Glass. The winner’s share of $22,000 boosted her 1989 earnings to $183,725 from four wins, three seconds and three thirds in 14 starts.
Survive paid $13.20, $4.20 and $3.60 in the field of eight. She defeated favored Stormy But Valid by a length and a quarter. Stormy But Valid paid $3.20 and $2.80. Three lengths farther back was Hasty Pasty, who paid $3.20 to show.
Eddie Delahoussaye rode Survive and the win gave him a riding double and increased his lead to three wins over Russell Baze, who didn’t ride on Wednesday, in the rider standings. Delahoussaye also won aboard favorite Idle Hope ($3.40) in the third race.
The victory also earned Survive a nomination to the Dec. 9 Grade II $100,000 Dahlia Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, according to trainer Richard Mandella.
