The Beatle Thrill

Regarding Robert Hilburn’s Nov. 25 review of Paul McCartney’s L.A. concert: Yes, the 47-year-old McCartney played Beatle classics with energy and enthusiasm. But there was something missing. The thrill was gone.
Hearing Beatle recordings today recalls the idealism of the ‘60s, the ingenuity of the music and the magic characteristic of the Beatles. But when I heard McCartney sing Beatle songs at the Forum, it made me long for the past; in that setting, songs that I had long regarded as sacred were somehow reduced to simply good songs.
