Junior High Dropout Problem Burdens Los Angeles Schools

About the junior high dropout problem--there is no mystery. Ask any LAUSD teacher. I’m surprised that state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig is “flying blind . . . knows that it’s a potential problem . . . but doesn’t know that much about it.”
He should visit a few elementary school classrooms and see exactly how students are being prepared for junior high school instruction.
In elementary, it’s native language instruction; in junior high, it’s English language instruction.
Is it any wonder that so many students have trouble making the “transition?”
