P.M. BRIEFING : Seoul’s Trade Surplus Plunges

SEOUL — South Korea’s trade surplus plunged to $999 million in 1989 from $8.9 billion in 1988, provisional Trade Ministry figures showed today.
Ministry officials blamed high wages, frequent strikes and the sharp appreciation of the won, the South Korean currency, for undermining productivity.
