Dravecky Has Surgery to Remove Tumor

NEW YORK — Dave Dravecky, former pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, underwent a second operation Thursday to remove a tumor from his left arm.

Performing the 4 1/2-hour surgery was Murray Brennan, chairman of the surgery department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

“There won’t be any results for several days,” Giant spokesman Matt Fischer said in San Francisco.

Dravecky, 33, had a cancerous tumor removed from his left arm in 1988 and spent the early part of the 1989 on the disabled list while undergoing rehabilitation.

He beat Cincinnati in his first game back last August, but in his next start, at Montreal, he shattered a bone in his left arm. He broke his arm again on Oct. 9 in the on-field celebration after San Francisco’s victory over Chicago in the National League playoffs.

Doctors discovered a lump during an examination at the Cleveland Clinic on Oct. 27. Dravecky, who was eligible to file for free agency, then asked to be put on the voluntary retired list.
