High Cost of Flying From John Wayne
Recent news tells us that, next year, it will cost 75% more to fly to Chicago from John Wayne Airport than from LAX. The cost discrepancy is even greater when flying to Phoenix. This is the result of the failure of prior county Boards of Supervisors to provide adequate airport capacity for Orange County. The present board is making an inadequate effort to correct this deficiency.
A partial remedy would be to take United Airlines’ two daily nonstops to Chicago and give them to Midway Airlines and then take America West’s seven daily nonstops to Phoenix and give them to Southwest Airlines. This would reward Midway and Southwest for maintaining their discounted fares in all of their markets. And the Orange County traveler would get a fairer break.
