Alan Paton, the author of “Cry, the Beloved Country,” describes the changes in his life brought about by the publication of that important book with the casual modesty that has made British sang-froid a byword. He describes debates in the World Council of Churches, the founding of the Liberal Party to oppose the implementation of the hated apartheid system and meetings with luminaries ranging from Nehru to Kurt Weil with the same polite circumspection he uses for accounts of family luncheons. The vigorous Christian activism he espouses predates contemporary “Liberation Theology” by more than three decades; unhappily, the goal of that activism--the establishment of a nonracial democracy in South Africa--remains unfulfilled.
