SDSU Beats Fullerton for Its Second Victory

Julie Evans scored 28 points to lead the San Diego State women’s basketball team to only its second victory of the season, a 71-68 decision over Cal State Fullerton Saturday night in Peterson Gym.

SDSU (2-12, 1-2 in Big West play), never trailed by more than eight and never led by more than eight. The Aztecs took the lead for good with 2:32 remaining when Evans sunk two free throws to make it 63-62.

Crystal Lee had 17 and Dee Dee Davis scored 14 for the Aztecs.

For the second consecutive night, the University of San Diego could not overcome a flat beginning as host Loyola Marymount rolled to a 78-70 victory.

USD had three players reach double figures: Candida Echevarria had 19, Lynda Jones scored 18 and Chris Enger added 13.

On Friday, USD opened slowly against Pepperdine before falling, 76-73.

USD dropped to 0-2 in the conference and is now 10-5 overall.

In the second half, UC San Diego blew open what had been close throughout the first 20 minutes and cruised to a 77-52 victory over Pomona Pitzer in a Division III game at UCSD.

The Tritons had only two players in double figures--Kathleen Alvarez (10) and Nadirah Scott (11); 13 players scored.

UCSD, which shot 48%, improved to 8-5 with its fourth consecutive victory.

Pomona fell to 7-6.

Point Loma Nazarene improved to 8-6 with an 85-71 victory over visiting Cal Lutheran.

Camille Armijo scored 32 for PLNC and made five of seven three-pointers. Lisa Mowday chipped in 13 points and also had 11 rebounds.

Cal Lutheran fell to 9-5.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Ron Hubbard scored a career high 40 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene College to a 100-87 victory over host Biola.

PLNC (6-10) trailed much of the game but tied the score for the first time with 12 minutes remaining when Brian Thurston’s jumper made it 65-65. The Crusaders led from then on.

Thurston finished with 25 points. Jim Hill had 22 for Biola (7-14).
