EAST BERLIN — East German journalists have taken over a regional Communist daily and are turning it into the country’s first independent newspaper, one of its editors said Sunday.
Peter Sterzing said the editorial staff and printing workers agreed to make the newspaper, Das Volk, into a daily free of links with any parties.
“It will in future appear as the Thueringer Allgemeine and will be run by an editorial council elected by secret ballot,” he said.
The newspaper, based in the southern regional city of Erfurt, has a circulation of 400,000.
