WORLD IN BRIEF : PERU : Maoist Guerrillas Kill 28 in Village

Maoist guerrillas of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) swept into an Andean village and killed at least 28 residents, officials said. About 100 rebels invaded the village of Acos Vinchos before dawn and went house to house, shooting both adults and children. Before they left, the rebels burned the town hall and an abandoned army barracks. Residents of the village had long resisted efforts to recruit them for the insurgency.
