Israeli warplanes rocketed a PLO radio station and guerrilla bases of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah in their first two air strikes on southern Lebanon this year. Police said five people were killed and 12 wounded. The attacks targeted Radio Jerusalem in the Palestinian refugee camp of Miye ou Miye near the port of Sidon and Hezbollah bases in four villages farther south. Palestinian guerrillas fired ground-to-air missiles that were deflected by scarlet heat balloons released by the pilots of the raiding jets. The station had been in the process of test broadcasts and was to start broadcasting Feb. 1.
