COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Turner Paces Cal State L.A. Past Chapman

Bruce Turner scored 16 points and LaVar Ball added 14 to lead Cal State Los Angeles to a 64-54 victory over Chapman in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game Friday at Cal State Los Angeles.
Cal State L.A. opened a 23-8 lead after 9 1/2 minutes and led, 37-27, at the half. Cal State L.A. is 7-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Frantz Reyes scored 19, Andre Hill had 14 and Roger Middleton 10 for Chapman (9-7, 1-2). Middleton, who is shooting 70% this season, made four of 10 shots and had nine rebounds.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:
Chapman 82, Cal State Los Angeles 70--Julie King had 18 points, Jackie Saunders had 17 and Bethel Trice had 16 for visiting Chapman (13-5, 1-2). Saunders and Trice each had 13 rebounds for Chapman.
In men’s nonconference swimming:
Arizona 83.5, UC Irvine 34.5--Senior Brian Judd won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute 44.1 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:40.3 for UC Irvine (5-2) at Arizona (1-2). Irvine sophomore Jeff Klatt won the 100 butterfly in 51.47 seconds.
In women’s nonconference swimming:
Arizona 82, UC Irvine 40--Sophomore Danielle Pajer won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.7) and the 200 breaststroke (2:29.82) for UC Irvine (3-4) at Arizona (2-1). Pajer came in second in the 50 freestyle (25.67) to Jennifer Carper (25.62).
