The Region : Officials Back Trash Plan

In an effort to solve their cities’ trash-related problems, officials from 25 San Gabriel Valley communities voted unanimously last week to support plans to use trains to haul trash to the desert landfills in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The vote, taken at a meeting in Baldwin Park of the San Gabriel Assn. of Cities, paved the way for presentations that will be made during the next three months to city councils throughout the valley. For the proposal to succeed, said Harvey Holden, the association’s executive director, cities must commit to hauling a combined total of 24,000 tons of trash per week.
Holden said taking trash to the desert “could be a 100- to 200-year solution of the solid waste problem” for the region.
