East German Dancer Comes to Long Beach: Thomas Vollmer, a solo dancer with East Germany’s premier ballet company Komisch Oper, will join the Long Beach Ballet’s Feb. 3 and 4 performances of “Coppelia,” David Wilcox, director of the Long Beach company, announced. “It was a shot in the dark that just came true,” said Wilcox, who danced for three years with the (West) Berlin Ballet. “Aside from a couple of dancers who are sent over for competitions . . . there’s never been an East German dancer that I know of that has danced with a U.S. company.” Wilcox said. Wilcox said Vollmer, who will perform the role of Dr. Coppelius, is a “top notch” character dancer who won the 1981 Bronze Medal in Moscow’s International Ballet Competition.
