In the space of three telecasts, the best in basketball, boxing and hockey will be on display this weekend.

This is All-Star weekend for the NBA. Today, TNT has coverage of the Legends Classic, Three-Point Shootout and Slam-Dunk Championship at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Channels 2 and 8 will air the 40th All-Star game at 12:15 p.m.

Mike Tyson makes what has become an all-too infrequent defense of his heavyweight title against James (Buster) Douglas at 7 p.m. tonight on HBO. This is Tyson’s first fight since his 93-second knockout of Carl Williams July 21.

Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, hockey’s two best players, skate in a 7:30 p.m. delayed Prime Ticket telecast tonight as the Kings head east to face the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In college basketball, both UCLA and USC have televised games today. The 19th-ranked Bruins meet No. 22 Arizona at noon on Channels 4, 36 and 39, while the Trojans visit Arizona State at 3 p.m. on Channel 2.

And finally, baseball is back. Sort of. While major-league baseball copes with labor problems that some fear could cancel the entire season, Prime Ticket begins its coverage of college baseball with UCLA playing host to Pepperdine at 1 p.m. Sunday. Steve Garvey will be making his debut as a Prime Ticket analyst.
