STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT : Canyon’s Cooper Tops Field of 17 County Athletes

Seventeen Orange County high school wrestlers will compete in the state tournament Friday and Saturday at the University of Pacific in Stockton.
The field includes Canyon’s Zach Cooper, who will try for his second consecutive state championship at 191 pounds. Cooper (34-0) has won 91 consecutive matches and a title at last week’s Masters meet.
Three other county wrestlers who won Masters championships also will try for state titles: Canyon’s Jason Mitchell (46-2) at 138 pounds; Savanna’s Tony Okada (46-0) at 132 pounds, and Mater Dei’s Rick Monge (46-1) at 145 pounds.
The meet begins at 9 a.m. Friday and quarterfinals start at 5 p.m. at Pacific’s Spanos Center. Semifinals start at 10 a.m. Saturday. Championship matches begin at 7 p.m.
Wrestlers qualified for the state meet by placing in the top six of their respective weight classes at the Masters meet.
