San Dieguito Selects New Football Coach

San Dieguito High School is expected to announce today that Dave Rudolph has been named the school’s football coach.
Rudolph, an assistant this year at Carlsbad, would replace Ed Burke, who compiled a 33-21-1 record in five years for the Mustangs before resigning to spend more time with his family.
“I’ve been really impressed with what Ed has done with the program. It’s recognized as a class organization,” said Rudolph, adding that he had not yet officially been offered the job as of late Tuesday afternoon.
Rudolph served as offensive line coach for both Carlsbad’s varsity and junior varsity in 1989. For the previous five years, he was offensive coordinator at Mater Dei in Orange County, and before that, he assisted at Laguna Hills and Gonzales high schools.
He graduated in 1975 from Cal State Fullerton, where he played wide receiver from 1971-74.
“I’m excited about his selection,” said Burke, who was on the committee to find his replacement. “Dave is the type of young man who will represent San Dieguito for a long time. He’s young, enthusiastic, is an outstanding teacher and is a class act in every respect.”
Said Dave LaBorde, San Dieguito’s athletic director: “The thing that’s most pleasing to me is that we had two interviews, and the teaching interview had absolutely nothing to do with football,” LaBorde said. “He was the No. 1 candidate from both interviews. We’re getting a good teacher who happens to be a good football coach.”
Rudolph will likely teach physical education and English.
San Dieguito was 8-4 last season, reaching the section 3-A quarterfinals before losing to Morse.
