WORLD : Mongolian Party Leaders Resign

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia — The entire Communist Party leadership resigned today in response to opposition demands and the leader of the longtime Soviet client state said the ruling party must renew itself to head off crisis.
The five-man Politburo of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party voted to abolish the constitutional clause declaring the party the leading force in society.
It also set April 10 as the date for a special party congress to elect a new Central Committee that, in the words of party General Secretary Jambyn Batmonh, should be younger and in favor of reform.
The Politburo voted to hold early elections this year for the new legislature, the People’s Great Hural. An exact date was not set.
The moves were obvious concessions to protesters who crowded the central square of the capital, Ulan Bator, on Friday to demand change in the party’s leadership and an emergency party congress.
