Thousands of bird-watchers crowded the gardens of Mission San Juan Capistrano to witness the yearly return of the swallows to their spring nesting grounds, while a group of Indians staged a peaceful demonstration to protest what they considered a diminished role at the 214-year-old mission. “We don’t want to get pushed aside,” said David Belardes, chief of the 900-member Juaneno tribe, which helped build the mission in 1776.
