More Data on Asbestos Removal

In response to last week’s On the House column by James and Morris Carey, “Steps in Removing ‘Cottage Cheese’ Ceiling,” The Times received several inquiries from readers wanting more information on asbestos removal.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission is the federal agency that consumers with questions about asbestos should call. The number of the Los Angeles office is (213) 251-7464. Ask for a copy of the consumer publication entitled “Asbestos in the Home,” which addresses the most frequently asked questions consumers have about asbestos. Allow one week for delivery.
Once you have had the opportunity to read the brochure, contact the CPSC with further questions or for the names of recommended testing labs. For the names of contractors doing this type of work, look in the Yellow Pages under asbestos abatement and removal.
