NATION IN BRIEF : INDIANA : Support Pours in for AIDS Victim
- Share via
AIDS patient Ryan White fought for his life in an Indianapolis hospital as thousands of messages of love and prayers poured in from small towns and big names, including President Bush and Michael Jackson. Singer Elton John flew in from Los Angeles and spent five hours with his family. The hospital handled 4,500 well-wishers’ calls, and expected 5,000 more today. White, 18, remained on a life-support system. The youth, infected by blood products five years ago, during his battle with AIDS has grown from an object of scorn in his hometown to an international spokesman for AIDS patients. Bush, who was in Indianapolis for a political fund-raiser, planted a tree for White at a ceremony 1 1/2 miles from the hospital.
