A bicyclist was struck and killed by a Jeep on busy Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach, the California Highway Patrol said today.
The cyclist’s identification was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
CHP Officer Lyle Whitten said the cyclist was riding a green 10-speed when he was struck on Pacific Coast Highway at 8th Street about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at Humana Hospital-Huntington Beach.
Whitten said the cyclist was riding north on the right edge of Pacific Coast Highway before he veered across two lanes and was hit by a Jeep driven by a Newport Beach man. The cyclist, who was wearing only black-and-white racing shorts, was thrown to the ground and suffered massive head injuries.
No citations have been issued and an investigation is under way, Whitten said.
