Robert F. Erburu, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Times Mirror Co., is the recipient of the 1990 Spirit of Los Angeles Award presented annually by the Los Angeles Headquarters City Assn.
The award--citing Erburu for his “personal commitment to the community”--was presented by Mayor Tom Bradley at the association’s 29th annual awards luncheon Tuesday at the Music Center. Past honorees include Bradley, Dodger coach Tommy Lasorda, Los Angeles Olympic Games chairman Peter Ueberroth, Rabbi Edgar Magnin and Gene Autry.
In his address, Erburu accepted the award “on behalf of my colleagues at The Times and Times Mirror . . . founded in Los Angeles, now national and even international in scope, although remaining very much in spirit, Los Angeles enterprises.”
In examining the future of Los Angeles, Erburu noted that the Los Angeles Times must continue to remind the community of civic problems and solutions if the area is to “achieve its destiny as the Eastern gateway to the Pacific Rim.”
